Alpha Phi Alpha Inc. was the first greek letter organization founded for African-American men on the campus of Cornell University. The organization, established Dec. 4, 1906, prides itself in finding it basic principles and foundations in that of scholarship, fellowship, good character and the uplifting of humanity.

At one time, Millsaps had a thriving community of Greek organizations aimed at African-American, but for a couple of years Millsaps College has not had a single Alpha on campus. The last Alpha at Millsaps, Jeremy McElmore, graduated from the college two years ago. However, the campus could see a new pledge class of Alphas coming in the very near future. On Nov.11, Dr. Audwin Fletcher, professor and director at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, will hold an informative session in Olin Hall 100 starting at 6 p.m. Any and all interested candidates are welcome to come and hear about this organization.

It is important to note that Alpha Phi Alpha Inc. never officially left the campus and has always been in good standing with the school. The past couple years have not seen any interested or qualified applicants for the organization.

The next pledge class to be initiated at Millsaps College would be part of the Omicron Gamma chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Inc. Fletcher spoke on what it would mean for the campus if it were to see the next pledge class cross.

“The chapter was founded on the Millsaps campus in the early ‘90s,” Fletcher said. “We have always been a strong voice in community, leading initiatives which strengthened our national, regional and local visibility. [ . . .] Having an organization for young men in which to belong and identify, will solidify the ownership of setting the standards for youth in the community to emulate.”

Fees and costs for any interested candidates are $2,200 for freshmen with at least 12 credit hours, $2,100 for sophomores, $2,000 for juniors, and $1,900 for seniors. Any and all questions regarding Alpha Phi Alpha can be directed to Audwin Fletcher at 601-573- 6700.
