COMM Club Returns

These days film and communicative media are at the center of popular culture and the language of the modern world. The new Film/COMM Club on campus plans to tap into that energy and grow into something amazing.

According to Dr. Henry Svec, the club sponsor and Assistant Professor of Communications studies, “The group has yet to clearly define a mission statement. […] Basically it’s a place for students who are interested in film, popular culture, media, games and other related topics in communication and film studies to meet and plan activities for future meetings.”

A spiritual predecessor to the new Film/COMM club is Dr. Curtis Coats’ “The Commie Club,” although it is no longer on campus. Svec wants to “get things going again,” and the new club is currently in the process of getting officially registered on campus.

Junior Emily Hussey is one of the club’s new members. “If anyone is interested in film, media or communication studies, they should definitely contact any of us to become involved.”

“We are trying to host a few film showings and possibly a trivia night, although we are still in the process of becoming an officially registered club and hosting elections,” Hussey said. “I just hope it encourages people to enjoy aspects of communication studies.”

Film and Communications students aren’t the only ones invited though. While it can be nice to join a major-specific club, the Film/COMM club is by no means exclusive. All enthusiasts welcome.

“I got involved by nature of my major, which is communications. I invite anyone and everyone to join; it’s going to be a lot of fun and it’s open to all majors,” Hussey said.
