Meet the Millsapian: Derrick Dupuy

This week’s Millsapian is Derrick Dupuy, a freshman double major in quantitative economics and mathematics. He also plans to double minor in secondary education and psychology.  Dupuy serves as a Presidential Ambassador and a member of Greek life on campus.

The Purple and White: What made you come to Millsaps?

Derrick Dupuy: …The first instinct was to pick which(ever) college offered me the most money. After a visit, I realized it was about much more than a scholarship. I really loved the intimacy (that Millsaps offers). All the students know the professors, and the professors know the students. Me being a people person, having the opportunity to interact with people on a personable scale definitely attracted me.

P&W: If you could, what one thing would you change about the campus?

DD: I would change how people view Greek life here on campus. I would want to see more info sessions about Greek life, fraternities and sororities and how we can find safe ways to enjoy our experience here at Millsaps.

P&W: Tell me an embarrassing story about yourself:

DD: I was walking a prospective student to class after I’d given him a tour, and we were walking up the steps to Murrah. There’s always that one big threshold, and I ended up double-stepping. I fell face to the door. So I just kept going and the student was like, “Are you alright?” and I just said, “Yeah.” I hated myself for the rest of the afternoon.

P&W: What one quality do you admire most about yourself?

DD: I find that I’m extremely collaborative. Meaning that I’m always open to giving my opinion but also to take a step back and humble myself to hear other’s opinions.

P&W: If you had to binge watch only one show, what would it be?

DD: If I had to watch a TV show I’d never get tired of, it’d have to be the AMC’s “Walking Dead.” I just live, eat, breathe and sleep “The Walking Dead.”

P&W: What professor has made the biggest impact on you thus far?

DD: If I had to pick only one, it’d be Dr. (Stephanie) Rolph. This is my first semester having her in my Connections class. Because Connections is a writing-based course, I feel that her motivation and energy to push me to do better as well as her tough critique definitely helps build me into a better writer and thinker and helps me approach real-world problems such as race and culture.

The Purple and White thanks Derrick for answering these questions! If you or someone you know would like to be the next “Millsapian,” you can email me at clevecd@millsaps.edu.

Hey there! I could have sworn I’ve been to this site before but after browsing through some of the post I realized it’s new to me. Nonetheless, I’m definitely glad I found it and I’ll be book-marking and checking back frequently!
