On April 12, the Millsaps men’s lacrosse team beat the Oglethorpe Petrels, 11-10, in a wire-to-wire matchup on its way to the Southern Athletic Association quarterfinals. The game was back and forth early on, with Oglethorpe taking a 3-1 lead after the first quarter of play. Simon Sherman got the Majors on the scoreboard with an early goal. He went on to score three more, leading the team in goals. Hunter Stevison and Jack Houtz also scored goals in the second quarter to tie the game.
The Petrels took the lead at the end of the half off a buzzer-beater goal, but the Majors came out firing in the second half. Sherman, Scott Budd and Ryan McKay scored to make it 7-5 in Millsaps’ favor, but the back-and-forth play continued. The Petrels scored three quick points, followed by goals from Sherman and Houtz to make the score 9-8 Millsaps going into the fourth quarter.
The Majors, down two men, faced adversity in the fourth quarter, and the Petrels capitalized to take the lead, 10-9.Sherman came to the rescue, putting the Majors on top with a short-handed goal, and the defense did the rest. Millsaps secured the 11-10 win to improve to 6-9 overall this season.
The next day, the Majors fell to Berry, 16-5. Millsaps is seeded sixth in the Southern Athletic Association tournament, and will take on Berry College again April 16.
