Millsaps College Set to Host 1st Annual School Wide Formal

Millsaps College is looking to shake things up this year in how formals are presented and celebrated at the school. Traditionally, fraternities and sororities around campus host their own formals and semi-formals throughout the year. For these events, fraternity or sorority members dress up and escort a date to a party with music and dancing in Jackson or in an alternate location, such as New Orleans. But what about independent students who are not afforded the opportunity to attend Greek formals? Millsaps has found the answer to this issue.

The Millsaps school-wide formal is tentatively set to take place Saturday, April 25, although this date is not set in stone.

Sophomore SBA Vice President Erika Coleman hopes the event will be a fun night for the entire school and the community beyond. “It is worth mentioning that it is not only school-wide, but we are inviting alumni and community members as well” she said. Coleman is excited to finally bring the formal experience to the large group of non-Greek students on campus. “Almost half of our student body are non-Greek or independent, so it presents an opportunity for those of us who are not affiliated with a Greek organization to go out and have the same experience.”

”I think it is a good idea [that the school is hosting a formal],” Thomas Mills said. ”I think for some, just from talking, some people see it as a prom. But other than that I think everybody has formals especially their own type of sorority, fraternity formal so I don’t see why you can’t have a school wide one either.

The location of the school-wide formal will be the Manship Restaurant located in Jackson off North State Street. The restaurant will also cater the food. Tickets are selling for $10 a person or $15 per couple.
