With four weeks of the semester down, Millsaps Majors sports teams are in full swing. There are eight fall sports teams currently in action and numerous events to recap.
The Millsaps Majors football team currently holds a 1-2 record, losing its first and third games to Belhaven University and the University of Chicago, respectively. However, the team captured a home win against Trinity University 24-20 in week two. The standout Major of that game was senior defensive lineman Alex Foust. He recorded eight total tackles and five sacks, which earned him the Southern Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week award. The Majors have home field advantage this Saturday as the team takes on conference opponent Hendrix College. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
With six games in the books, the Majors women’s soccer team stands at 0-5-1. In its second game, the team pulled out a 2-2 tie at home against Louisiana College. The team’s five losses, however, ended in dismal fashion, being outscored 21-1. The Majors will look to secure its first win as the team begins conference play against Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn. this Friday at 5 p.m.
After making it to the NCAA Tournament last year, the men’s soccer team is off to a slow start. While having a 3-4 overall record thus far, the Majors have only played at home once, and it recorded a 3-2 victory against the University of Mobile. The team will attempt to capture its first conference win as the Rhode College Lynx travel to Harper-Davis field this Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
The Majors volleyball team is off to a rough start to the season as it holds a 2-6 overall record. Conference play started last weekend when the team faced Centre College on Saturday and Sewanee on Sunday. Both matches were away and both ended in 1-3 set losses for the Majors. The team looks to recover on their home court as conference rivals Birmingham-Southern College enter the Hangar Dome tonight. The first serve is set for 6 p.m.
The men’s and women’s cross country teams are also in action with two meets already in the books. The season began for both teams at the Mississippi College Season Opener on Sept. 2. Michael Sullivan and James Armstrong led the men in the 5K race finishing 29th and 32nd, respectively, which helped the Majors finish eighth overall. For the women’s 4K race, Sarah Smith and Anna Wilson had strong showings, placing sixth and 22nd overall. The action continued last weekend as both teams competed at the Louisiana State University Cross Country Invitational. Sullivan and Smith again headlined the 5K races, leading the team with 34th and 25th place, respectively. The Millsaps cross country teams will travel to Marshall, Texas on Oct. 1 to compete in the EBTU Invitational.
Millsaps’ golf teams are also in full swing behind new head coach Jack Belote. Both teams started their seasons by competing in the Rhodes Invitational. The women finished in last place, but Andrea Vasquez was the top performer for the Majors with a total score of 170, finishing in a tie for 19th place overall. The men finished the tournament in 14th place out of 18 teams. Leading the Majors was Tyler Katsner, who tallied a total score of 147 and finished in a tie for 15th place overall. Both teams hit the green again on Oct. 2. The men will compete in the Oglethorpe-Royal Lakes Fall Invitational, and the women will travel to Hattiesburg for the William Carey Invitational.
