The Millsaps men’s soccer team concluded its regular season Saturday on a three-game winning streak, and will enter post-season play with confidence after a 4-1 victory over the Rhodes Lynx. The women’s team closed out its regular season conversely, with two losses this week including a 4-1 loss at Rhodes Saturday.
In the final home game of the season, the men’s team celebrated the seniors’ accomplishments with the squad and the offense came out firing late in the game to overcome a one-goal deficit. The Majors trailed 1-0 for more than 80 minutes against the Centre College Colonels, but within the span of 60 seconds, junior Steven Chrobok and sophomore Alex Bourland combined for the tying goal and the go-ahead goal. It was a display of resiliency from a team that hopes to make a deeper run in the postseason than ever before after losing only two players from last year’s stellar lineup.
Saturday, the men poured goals on the struggling Rhodes Lynx early and often, earning a 4-1 victory to close out the regular season. Alex Bourland had a career day, scoring goals in the 12th and 22nd minutes. Star seniors Lukas Elmhammar and Nico Roth concluded their Millsaps regular season careers by tacking on one goal each. The Majors hope to continue their momentum into post season Southern Athletic Association play and give Coach Steve Voltz, the only Millsaps men’s soccer coach in school history with a winning record, a serious run at the national tournament.
The women’s team concluded its season with more tough losses, as has been the case for the majority of the 2015 campaign. Senior Lindy Robichaux scored the Lady Majors’ lone goal in a disheartening 4-1 loss at Rhodes Saturday as the women moved to a 3-14-1 record overall with a 1-6 conference record. Senior goaltender Elise Davis had a strong showing, fanning away 10 shots on 17 total attempts from the Lynx. Davis had a season high 15 saves in a 5-0 loss to the Mississippi College Choctaws on the women’s team’s senior day and final home game of the season.
The women enter the SAA tournament as the seventh seed, and will go on to face second-seed Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, next week. The men will host a playoff game this Saturday against Hendrix College, and start what they hope will be a long postseason.
Coach Voltz has been winning since his Neu Isenberg days on Germany!!
