Posted on November 18, 2019June 27, 2020 by wimbelj

Word of the Week: Danger

Our new weekly editorial segment, Word Nerd, features Dr. Pickard who is a professor and graduate of Millsaps College. Dr. Pickard delves into his love for language to highlight the history and uniqueness of the language we speak today.

Definition: “Danger,” ultimately from the Latin word dominus, which means “lord” or “master” (OED). As Heather McHugh puts it, “We get our danger from the lord.”

“We get our danger from the lord” (“Etymological Dirge”)

-Michael Pickard, Ph.D.

If you or someone you know has been exposed to domestic violence (violence committed by a spouse or intimate partner) during the pandemic, the Mississippi Center for Investigative Reporting (MCIR)'s student journalists from Millsaps would like to talk to you. The interview will be completely and strictly confidential.

Contact Anne Marie Cunningham, MCIR's fellow-in-residence, at amclissf@gmail.com for more information.
