National Book Award winner Sarah Broom will be featured on campus Tuesday evening in a conversation moderated by author Kiese Laymon.
The conversation between Broom, author of the popular memoir The Yellow House, and Laymon will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Gertrude C. Ford Academic Complex.
Laymon is a former Purple and White contributor and is the author of several books, including his own memoir Heavy. As part of a “Race Relations” Special Issue of The Purple and White published in 1993, Laymon reflected on his own experiences at Millsaps.
Revisiting Laymon’s writing forces us to confront the complex history of race at Millsaps and to challenge the common narrative of the college as a progressive leader among primarily white institutions in the state of Mississippi.
As he returns back to campus tomorrow, the Millsaps community can take this opportunity to consider what has changed since the 1990s, what has not changed, and what we can do about it.
