Men’s Soccer Loses to Berry, Finishes Season

The men’s soccer team finished its stellar season Saturday in a loss, 1-0, to the Berry Vikings in the Southern Athletic Association tournament. The Majors won the SAA regular season title earlier in the week, and moved on to defeat Hendrix in the opening round of the SAA tournament, 4-2. While the scoreboard will not reflect it, the Majors dominated the game statistically, and finished the season on a strong effort.

Berry struck first, just four minutes into the match, with Christian Fulbright stinging the upper right corner of the goal off an assist from Mackenzie Tittle. Following the goal, though, the Majors’ defense shined. The defense, including Daniel Staursky, Chris Lawrence and goalkeeper Jonathan Huebbe, only allowed one shot on goal for the rest of the match. Huebbe finished the game with two saves. The Majors out-shot the Vikings 19-9, but Berry goalkeeper Jon Nelson came in clutch to make six vital saves that kept his team in the lead. Lukas Elmhammar capped off a brilliant season by leading the shot column with six shots.

On Friday, the Majors routed Hendrix on scoring efforts from Nico Roth, Chris Lawrence and Lukas Elmhammar. With the win, the Majors ousted the host Warriors and brought their record to 13-5.

The task was certainly a tough one: Win three games in three days. Typically in NCAA athletics, teams get breaks of at least a couple days after a game before competing again.

For the Majors though, the only thing to do now is wait and see if they get an at-large berth to the NCAA tournament. At 13-6, the team stands a solid chance.
